Just a 'few' (!) things about what I've been up to recently...
The weekend before last I wanted to go to the museum & I was told it was walking distance from town, but it turned out to be much further than I was led to believe (& made worse by people giving me wrong directions along the way!). Guess what though... it was SHUT!! Closed for renovations until July! It turned out that the Snake Park was next door though, so instead I spent my afternoon looking at lots of different snakes, chameleons, tortoises, terrapins, crocodiles, & they even had a small aquarium (I LOVE aquariums!). I really enjoyed it, but found myself developing a slight phobia of snakes as I was told how many of the deadly snakes are found in the Masai Mara... & I'm going there on a CAMPING safari!! Eek!
After a strange morning, I then spent the afternoon at the SOS Youth Centre at a children's project organised by 2 volunteers from Holland.
Last Friday I visited Boston School in Matopeni because I haven't seen the children there for ages! I arrived at lunch time to avoid disturbing classes, & everyone was very excited to see me which was lovely! It was great to see all the children again & to catch up with the teachers.
In the evening Ahsan, who is from Weetabix here in Nairobi, took me out for dinner. This was a real treat for me because I haven't been out to a restaurant since I arrived in Kenya! Ahsan took me to 'The Carnivore', a very well-known restaurant here in Nairobi where they serve all kinds of unusual meats. Inside, the restaurant itself was amazing - all the meats were on spits that you walk past to get to your table, and they had African music playing, and dancers nearby. The waiter then explained that it was a set menu, & that people would keep coming around to our table offering different meats which they carve onto your plate until you put the flag down on your table to "surrender" because you're full! I really liked this concept & I actually ate LOTS! I had a really lovely evening & it was nice to make a new friend, though it's a shame we've met just as I am getting ready to leave Kenya! After a few hours of talking and eating various meats ranging from beef, pork & chicken, to ostrich and CROCODILE, I finally gave in & surrendered!!
The following day I was still so full that I couldn't eat the whole day! I went into town & watched The Pirates of the Caribbean, which I'd been dying to see for ages!
My students are all very well & still scoring highly in their exams, so I am still very pleased with them. They keep asking about when I'm leaving & hoping that I will extend my stay. I will be very sad to say goodbye to them in just TWO week's time!
By the way, I don't think that I told you that I'm leaving Kenya in 2 weeks. I changed my plans ages ago because I am getting very low on money. I was also hoping to get on a University course this year to study a Masters in Social Work. However, after being rushed to do my form in a couple of days & not being able to be there in person for an interview means I have not been successful. I have been waiting for feedback for 6 weeks, which is why I have been on the Internet so much recently; anyway, I finally heard from Bristol Uni. yesterday & so I am now officially a REJECT!! Ha ha. Sorry for avoiding questions from some of you about what I plan to do when I get home or asking when I plan to return to the UK... I only told 2 people about my application. Anyway, so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has written to me, and to let you know not to send any more letters now please because I won't be here to collect them! I go on a safari from June 17th to July 17th, so I will be quiet until at least July 17th... I finish in Jo'burg but fly to Sri Lanka the next day, so I will update you on my FAB safari once I get to Colombo!
I had Wednesday off this week so that I could extend my visa... it took HOURS & was very boring... but after lots of queuing & waiting & then giving my finger prints, it was approved & I am now classed as "an alien in Kenya"! In the afternoon I then visited the Weetabix factory & offices. It was very interesting, especially since I got to have a tour of the factory... I spent 2 years at Wbx UK & my tour was when the factory was on shut down! I spoke to lots of different people, & they really have a lovely team here (as well as in the UK, of course!). I then met up with Ahsan for lunch, & then spent the rest of the afternoon talking to more people. They have a vacancy & I joked that I should apply... though I am avoiding finding out more info incase I am tempted because I do like it here in Kenya!
Today is a holiday so I have time to spare to update my website (it takes so long, I need the extra time!). I'm taking Norah out for the day tomorrow as a treat, just for lunch and to the cinema. She likes Mr. Bean & the film was released today... not my kind of film to be honest but she is very excited! Then on Sunday I am meeting Kim & Anke, the 2 volunteers from Holland, to go to a festival/concert (not sure?!) at the stadium here in Nairobi.
All for now then. I hope you are all well & that it has now stopped raining... if it's any consolation it has been raining here too & is quite cold because it's moving into their winter!
Have a nice weekend!
Rach xx
