So we arrive in New Delhi after the long flight from Sydney. I am almost unsure what to expect outside the airport walls.
Walking through the exit doors there is a swarm of people holding up signs, waiting for loved ones or ready to pounce on the nearest tourist. Just as you would usually see outside any busy Asian city airport.
An Indian man comes straight up to us asking if we had a pre booked taxi, as soon as we said yes he was escorting us across the road to an area full of old white taxicabs. Although we were told our taxi would be black and yellow he shows us to the white cab and we get it. Reminding me the of the unintended trust you put in strangers when in a foreign country.
The taxi starts making its commute to our hotel, swerving in and out of traffic on the 4 lane highway that could possibly be a 7 lane one considering it's more like a first in best served driving policy. I smell the car fumes, hear the loud toots of horns and see the thick smog out the window of the taxi. The atmosphere has a Bangkok feel to it.
Not surprisingly the taxi driver does not know where our hotel is so we make a stop to the tourist office where the kind man helps us get directions for the driver. We arrive at our hotel in popular Connaught place. It is a 5 star hotel but the inside is a far cry from the outside of the building. Half done footpaths, shells of buildings and bits of rubbish line the streets yet here lies 5 star hotels invisible from the outside.
I feel excited to be here in this crazy hustling city and looking forward to exploring its wonders.
