We left the States with a picturesque flight through Iceland. It was beautiful out of the plane window, a big island of ice and snow! Maybe one day on round the world 2!! Catherine's pictures of their recent Iceland trip confirmed that it is truly a beautiful island to be explored! But our stop over was only 2 hours.
We visited my cousins, Kim and Mark, which both live near Earsfield, London. It was so good to be with family and just to relax, without spending every waking minute deciding what to do next, where to go next or figuring out how to get there... We got to Kim's house easily with her perfect directions and was so spoiled by her with healthy food and even bathballs for Alecha. We just chilled in her home with her 2 lovely doggies the first day. That evening we went to a local pub just around the corner from her house.
Ironically the pub's name was the Halfway house and we were exactly half way through our trip. The next day we went sight seeing with Kim! Buckingham palace, Big Ben, houses of parliament, West Minister Abby and finished off with drinks on top of a very high building overlooking London. It was great to see this beautiful old working city. That night we had a themed St. Patrick's day party at Kim's house. Lovely salmon bites and traditional Irish foods, with Guinness and some wine with her wine club friends! What a great evening! Had a small headache the next day, maybe it was the jetlag kicking in! Hahaha!
Well, we were actually suppose to have gone to Ireland for St. Patrick's day, but after the Carnival we realized that its not what you celebrate that counts but with who!! Thus we stayed in London with our cousins! I got to see some rugby again, in a packed pub, and England lost the six nations against Whales. Great!!! Then we went out with some of Mark and Dawn's friends to a Korean restaurant. Great food, wine and company is always a winner. Although the next day the jet lag gave me another headache! Interesting thing we noticed was that almost all of Kim and Mark's friends are South Africans now also living abroad.
Sunday we just chilled out and bought some pap and boerewors at one of the many South African shops that we made at Mark and Dawns flat. Amazing how many South Africans work here. We couldn't gossip in Afrikaans any more as people on the trains might just be another boertjie in London. We also used this time to plan ahead for our trip to France and Germany.
Monday we explored some more of London and had some High tea at Kensington palace! "Some lovely earl grey and english tea with some red velvet cake!" said nose in the air with the Queen's English. We also did some window shopping at Harrods (luckily for the budget we didn't have space in the bags!). Tuesday we took the Eurostar fast train to Paris.
Thank you very much Kim for opening your house and spoiling us! We really appreciated it! And also thank you for all the France advise!
