For the next 10 days we are exploring on our own with our ‘rent a wreck’ hire car, a stunning orange/gold Pontiac Sunfire. We drove from Calgary to Banff on the ‘wrong’ side of the road without any trouble – Craig had it sorted after we worked out a few little tricks to the car – like you can only start it when it’s in gear with the clutch in!
We had a little look around the town of Banff and made plans for the next couple of days………
We woke up to snow and it kept snowing all day. We drove up to the gondola but with snow and low cloud we weren’t going to be able to see much so we didn’t go up. The next day it was still snowing. We had booked a Discover Banff & its Wildlife tour which still went so off we went to discover Banff in a snow storm. The highlights were Bow Falls (which we couldn’t see), the Fairmount Banff Springs Hotel (which we could just make out), the hoodoos (which we could just make out), Lake Minnewanka (which we couldn’t see) and the Cave & Basin. The cave and basin is a natural historic site where one of the first hot springs was found in Banff. This was an inside attraction so we could enjoy this one. The only wildlife we managed to spot were a herd of elk sitting together in a paddock covered in snow.
The next day it was still snowing and visibility was really bad however we had planned to drive to Lake Louise so we did.
