We have been in malaysia for just over a week. Everything is totally different to Thailand, it's a very clean place with a mix of chinese, indian and malay cultures. It's extremely developed and as it was a colony until 50yrs ago, it is alot like the UK. It's a very green country with lots of parks etc and a great mix of cultures.
We've been staying with Larry's aunt and uncle here in the city, which has been brilliant. It's great to be taken around by locals to experience the real malaysia.
Larry's finding it particularly hard because its a muslim country, booze is really expensive and not widely available! DISASTER! I also had a bit of a culture shock, the role of women here is sometimes to be seen and not heard (so as you can imagine- i find it pretty hard!).
We've spent a few days exploring the city, going up the twin towers and visiting the colonial buildings. We enjoyed the end of chinese new year celebrations with lion dances and gymnasts. We've also been to a traditional indian restaurant, where you eat off a banana leaf with your fingers- it was lovely.
We went to Malaka in the South for a night. It has a very strong portugese and dutch influence so the buildings were impressive. Now we are in Penang, which is an island on the northwest coast. it's really nice and has lots to see. Today, we went to one of the largest temples in asia, it was incredible. A friend of Larry's uncle took us out for a chinese meal last night- sea snails and lots of satay, which was suprisingly yummy.
The rest of the time we've been enjoying swimming and playing tennis and having nice, home comforts for the first time in over a month. Off to Singapore on Monday then to oz on the 14th- can't wait!
Take care,
