After a couple of hours drive south on the Pan Canadian Highway, a great 4 laned, beautifully constructed road that has been recently upgraded because it was the most dangerous highway in Canada. we arrived in Victoria. After a little sight seeing tour of the harbour, Government house and the Empress Hotel, narrated by our trusty driver, Charles we stopped in Government Street to walk the city centre. We happened upon Bastion Square where some Artisan Markets were. One stall attracted us in particular with its chain mail suit (of aluminium) hanging up and lots of interesting jewellery made of rings of all sizes and colours. We quickly fell into conversation with the owner and during the course of the chat we discovered that he is a Baha'i! Well the chat turned into an extended conversation on all topics spiritual and moral; it was great to meet such a knowledgable and friendly person, who also makes such interesting jewellery.
Lunch with a friend was next on the agenda. It was in a little Persian restaurant called "The Side Dish". The food was fragrant and flavoursome and I felt like I had known Shalah (Sholeh's dear friend from when they were in their 20's) for a long time instead of only just meeting her. When lunch finished we all could hardly bear to part so we went around to her place for the rest of the afternoon which was wonderful and pleasant. Her house has such a welcoming serenity.
We made it back to our motel with enough time for a quick shower, and change; into our best dresses ready to go to a concert By Jessie Cook at the Royal Theatre. Jessie Arnaud Cook is a Canadian guitarist, composer, and producer. Widely considered one of the most influential figures in "nuevo flamenco" music, he incorporates elements of flamenco rumba, jazz & many forms of world music into his work. (Wikipedia) It was a fabulous concert that really got the audience up and standing at the end. The sound of the instruments was perfectly done, the lighting effects evocative and it all flowed.
It was a wonderful birthday present from Sholeh and Charles. Thank you.
