So I've arrived in sunny Langkawi, and yes it is sunny!! actual hot sun! had a bit of fun getting here - the ferry was pretty uneventful, but when we arrived at Langkawi, a group of about 9 of us got a bus from the jetty to Pantai Centai, the main beach in Langkawi, and were quoted 42 Ringitts, but when we arrived, the taxi driver changed his mind and tried to charge us 54 Ringitts. I was with a lot of people, and we all argued with him, particularly a couple of the guys, and it quickly escalated into a big fight - me and a couple of the other girls stood back while the taxi driver shouted and threw on of the bigger guys on the floor, and then tried to steal some of our bags to hold as ransom for the 'rest' of his money!! Eventually, we got 1 Ringitt more off everyone and ended it before it got too nasty, but that was an interesting start to my stay on the island! Because of the trouble in Bangkok, everyone's flooded to Malaysia, and Langkawi seems to have taken the brunt of it - its packed and every hostel is full- even people who have made reservations have been let down. I went in and out of hostels and motels which were all either totally full or ridiculously expensive. I was just starting to have visions of sleeping on a beach when a kiwi guy stopped me and asked me if I was looking for a hostel, and took me up to his hostel, Delta motel where there were apparently rooms. This island is loads more expensive, and accomodation is about double what it is everywhere else, but Sam, the kiwi had just moved rooms to a twin, so we split the cost, and shared a room, Worked out perfectly, as I now also have some company in Langkawi, after leaving Lil and Luke behind in Penang which was quite sad. We wandered out about 10 metres from our hostel onto the beach- which is a gorgeous palm fringed white sandy beach, is really nice. We had lunch on the beach, and then found out a bout a rice museum, called laman padi, where they have loads of padi fields and lots of information about traditional rice growing. It was fascinating - saw lots of wildlife around the paddy fields, and also saw their buffalo that they use for ploughing. Then one of the guides came and gave us a little private tour around the gardens, and showed us loads of cool plants, insects, birds and fruits. He gave me a four leaf clover which was very exciting, made me some earrings out of a baby coconut, gave us hundreds of leaves and plants to smell, and rubbed aloe vera all over me. He also cracked open a coconut and showed us how they turn it into coconut milk, and then rubbed it all over my arm - was attracting flies all the way home. there was a really interesting museum too, and the whole thing was free - was very impressive!
Went for dinner with Sam to a seafood restaurant which was really nice - good authentic malaysian food which is always the best food! We've booked a half day island hopping tour for tomorrow which sounds really fun, so will tell you all about that soon!
