I've been asked a lot of questions about the university and the studying in Bangkok. I studied at Kasetsart University (KU), which is one of the largest and highly ranked universities in Thailand. I participated in the KUSEP- program, Kasetsart University Student Exchange Program, in a program called International Business, Economics and Thai culture. The program consisted of five courses: four mandatory and one optional. The option was between the course Special Problems and Tropical Marine Ecotourism. In our group's case, no one chose the TME-course, as the option was to have a three-week long break instead!
Here are brief descriptions of the courses.
Analysis of International Economics
AIE was one of our first courses, which was quite intensive. The course consists of topics like international trade, international economic integrations, and foreign exchange rate systems. The course required some individual tasks, a group work and presentation, a term paper as a group and an exam. AIE might be one of the trickiest courses, especially if you are not a business student, as the area requires a bit of knowledge about the terminology and subject. This is the most math-like course of the five.
Strategic Planning for Competitiveness
SPC was in our case a very intensive class - we had it for six hours every day for a week! SPC is quite interesting as it is a quite broad spectrum of subjects including strategic planning, distribution channels and consumer behavior. For me, this one of the most interesting courses as the topics where viewed from the Asian aspect. This course had a few pop quizzes and a home exam, which was basically to do a strategy for Nokia using all the course material.
International Business
IB was a course that lasted throughout our exchange program. IB consisted of many different lecturers, who had all very different teaching methods. The course consisted of topics including the global business environment, international trade and international business management. The IB course had quite a lot of small individual tasks, a mid-term exam, a final take-home exam, a final group term paper (20 pages!) and a presentation.
Thai Conversation in Everyday Life
Every single Thai lecture was literally like watching a stand-up comedian performing! Dr. Kowit who teaches Thai class is a great teacher, who makes learning the quite difficult language of Thai feel fun and interesting. Learning Thai, even the most basic things, will help you a lot in living in Thailand, as the locals rarely speak any English. In the Thai class you will learn the basic vocabulary and phrases needed in e.g. taxis, restaurants etc. The course had a final exam, which was held orally with a pair.
Special Problems in Operations Management
The SP course consisted in our case of many field trips and company visits. It was quite interesting as the company visits were to a large variety of very different types of companies. The SP course was very different and informal compared to all the other courses as we had only two days of lectures. The picture of this post was taken at a SP field trip!
As an overview, the courses very different to the Finnish ones, which at some points was a little confusing, but then again very refreshing. The courses were at points quite demanding, but in a very different way. Then again, the stress was not on the final exam, as it often is in Finland.
If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help. I wrote a post on KU also in the beginning of my exchange, you can find it at http://blogs.kilroy.eu/betina/blog/thailand/bangkok/2010-02-12 13:36:31 .
