Koh Samet is a national park located close to Bangkok. It's only a few hours bus ride away, so it's a very popular weekend destination for people living in Bangkok. You can take the bus to Koh Samet at Ekkamai-station and there are also mini-vans leaving from Victory Monument. The bus ride is around 2-3 hours and then a short ferry trip to the island.
Koh Samet is small and sweet: perfect for weekend trips. I have to say that it would've been better to visit Koh Samet before visiting other beaches in South-East Asia, because now it just felt too small and not enough wow-factor! But this is just my opinion. The thing that surprised the most about Koh Samet was that it was so dirty! As it is a national park and you even pay an environmental fee as you enter the island, there are a lot of trashes everywhere. But then again, some of my friends who visited Koh Samet just loved it. People are very different! As Koh Samet is very small, you might find trouble finding accommodation. In our case, it was quite expensive compared to other places. We ended up getting frustrated with the high-price, but bad quality options and we took quite an upscale option on a more private beach, Tubtim Resort, which was around 2000B per night. But it was a beautiful, luxurious bungalow with a sea view.
I would recommend going to Koh Samet in the beginning of your travels, especially as a party weekend with friends, because that's what its famous for! A few nights is perfect here, as there is not that many activities on the island compared to for instance Koh Chang.

Sbipk Thank you nice article. I am someone who really love samet. Last month I’ve been to Surin Beach and like this place very much because this beach is quiet, white beaches and crystal clear waters. Surin Bay Inn is the great accommodation, i stay here. It’s just like a happy family, everyone there is so nice and hospital. I am sure, i will come back. SEE YOU PHUKET
