Paradise, sun and pure bliss. Meeting mum, dad and James at the airport was an amazing yet surreal feeling. They were about to experience Thailand for the first time and I couldn't wait to see their faces. Our few days on Samui were spent exploring the island by truck and then relaxing by the pool and eating all the Thai food that I had missed whilst at home. We visited temples by the sea, shopping towns, fishing villages with the real highlight being the elephant rides. I took everyone to a street noodle soup place by the road side and for less than £3 pounds all four of us ate well! On the last day in Samui, before leaving for Koh Tao, I went on a 3 hour bike ride with Anna. Wow the heat! The sun beat down on us latterly and there I was in flipflops, shorts and a vest top…at least an all over tan was achieved, well just. You get to see things which you miss when in a car and it provides the perfect opportunity for stopping at view points along the way. It was a challenging ride but worth it.
I was like a child at Christmas when arriving in Koh Tao. I could not wait to get there. I had sorted out the accommodation beforehand so it was an easy journey from the pier to our beach huts as we were picked up by the guesthouse tuk tuk. When we arrived at the accommodation I couldn't believe it, not only had it changed, for the better, since I had been here but we had beach front bungalows…literally on the beach. I think at that stage I had died and quickly gone to heaven! Eating breakfast, lunch and dinner beside the sea never got tiring. I took a day to do a couple of dives, this time with another dive centre, which always gives me a buzz. We saw an array of different fish and my confidence grew somewhat. The following day I decided that I wanted to complete my first aid course so that I could start my rescue diver course in the near future. This would mean that I would be one step away from becoming a dive master, my ultimate goal. Going out to a beach party before the first aid course probably wasn't the best idea I had due to the constant up and down motion that my body had to partake in, but as they say…you only live once.
So all in all time was lost and happiness grew on the island itself and before we all knew it our 4 nights were over and it was back to Koh Samui.
When we arrived back at Koh Samui we decided to rent a jeep. This jeep however was interesting ; It was a small gold subaru with enough room for mum and dad! James and I rode in the open backed boot. It was great moving around the island in this, even if the handbrake worked intermittently and the gears were temperamental; for £16 a day you couldn't go wrong. We explored 'Crystal Bay' which had a lovely beach and the sea was like glass.
First to leave were dad and James on a plane back home, then early hours of the following morning mum and I started our journey back to Bangkok. It was sad to leave Koh Samui and even sadder to leave Nick and Anna. Their hospitality and company made it. At the back of my mind however I know that we will be back soon.
