My weekend got off to a fab start with a music quiz, a few beers (I gave in) and cocktails followed by a visit to good old Temple bar. I remember when I first set eyes on 'Pub Street' I was amazed to find that there were actually clubs in Cambodia. Temple bar was a favourite, however I forgot how hot and sweaty it gets so I cleverly positioned myself near the aircon vent…a win win situation!
I got up bright and early Saturday to ensure that the plasterer who was fixing my music wall knew which wall he was plastering and i also had to give him the materials to do the job. I had visions of him plastering over a painted wall so I thought showing my face would be the best thing to do. I was pleased that I had popped in to see him and when I cycled into school on Monday morning it had been perfectly completed. Job number one done!
Saturday evening Rosie and I took a trip to see the Battambang circus 'Phare Ponleu Selpak'. Through word of mouth it was recommended and it was worth every penny! Their sheer strength and acrobatic tricks were phenomenal! Sitting at the front with nothing other than myself to protect me from the fire and the acrobatics had me on the edge of my seat! I was speechless afterwards but not too speechless to go on stage and have a comical photo taken with extremely fit and sweaty bodies.
Sunday I was up early and set off to a waterfall called Kbal Spean. Half way into the tuk tuk journey I started to recognise the surroundings and then realised that I had visited the waterfall last year- only last year it was without water. The ride there was stunning. We rode past vast rice fields and lots of wooden houses with locals selling palm sugar wrapped in bamboo leaves. We rode past houses on stilts drying out their fruit and vegetables on the ground and saw multiple people on one motorbike. It was a long journey but a good one if you wanted the 'windswept look'. We climbed up to the top of the mountain which was roughly 1900meters and once we got to the top we were rewarded by a beautiful waterfall with many engravings on the rocks near the waterfall. Mao had a new phone which had a snazzy camera so he was snapping away as often as I was. After our trip up the waterfall we went to a temple called Banteay Srei. This temple is named the ladies temple and is a 10th century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. It was lovely to be submerged in culture, minus the tourists, and to see all the delicate and intricate carving work. After this we took a detour to the famous Angkor Wat just in case I didn't have chance to see it later on during my stay. It gave an aura of importance and the crowds certainly showed it.
So weekend number two down, sadly only another two with Rosie to go…
