Beth´s world trip
Week 1 14/0-21/09
Rotorua to Wellington
Rotorua stinks! and i mean that literally. its built on a volcanic sulphur and everywhere smells of egg! but there is lots to do.
so we started with zorbing. now i had almost talked myself into saving the money but we got free clothes hire and towel and 10% off the already cheaper 3 person zorb. in the end it was only 9 pound, so what the hell! it was a hydro-zorb filled with warm water. we had to roll it onto the hill from inside (giant hampster stylee, very funny!) and we were all immediately knocked off our feet. it was imposile to stand back up so we all slid whizzing around on our arses laughing our heads off. sadly this is the point where they jump out with cameras and take lots of horrid photos of you looking like drowned rate in the ovely orange and grey clothes! nice! we laughed so hard at the photos that we ended up buying them, though am not sure i will ever show another person!
next stop Tamaki Maori Villange. brilliant night, our bus driver mark (who knows how to say kia ora in 56 languages and yes have heard it in all of them!) took us to the village outside Rotorua. we chose, or rather his mum volunteered, our bus chief, who had to face 3 maori warriers that challenged him before we entered the village. we then got to look aroung the village, where maori men and women were explaining maori life. this was followed bu a cultural show (of course including the haka) before a huge and very yummy hangi buffet (all the meat is cooked underground) never felt soooo stuffed!
on our way to Taupo we stopped at wa-o-tapu thermal wonderland. the colours you get to see ar amazing, but it smells so bad because of the sulphur. we made sure we were there in time to watch the lady knox geyser erupt (20 ft into the air)
then it as time for our taupo highlight, a SKYDIVE! we were supposed to go at 1pm but it was too cloudy but by 3pm there were enough breaks in the cloud. apparently some cloud gives ou more perspective. the jump as amazing. loved freefalling and when we flew through the cloud the temperature drop was amazing. felt a bit sick on the cannopy rde and my ears hurt but it was brilliant. of course we folloed this with a curry and v amusing drinks in mulligans.
our next stop was napier, where sel and i did a self-guided art deco tour (napier is famous for being rebuilt after an earthquake totally in art deco) and new zealands national aquarium.
from napier we headed to wellington, where we walked the city and did the cable car for the great view of the city. wednesday night we went out (student night) it was very amusing. we met up with nina who skydived on the same day and her friends. everyone as a bit rough the next day so we didnt see much more before our ferry to the south island
