Beth´s world trip
south island, nelson - fox glacier
week 4 22/09-28/09
we headed straight to nelson, a lovely little town at the top of the north island. we visited the market and the famous bead shop and walked to the center of nz! which it turns out geographically is a hill with a view of the town (nice but i wouldnt do it in flip flops again!!)
selina and i also did a kayaking tour of abel tasmen, the smallest national park in nz. we paddled along its beautiful coastline for 5 hours on the bark bay seal experience, sadly it was too rough to stay by the seals so i only got a quick glance at 3! it was ots of fun although hardwork. especially as it was sels first time in a kayal and she has a fear of water!
after nelson we stopped briefly in westport and carried on to Hokitika, where we looked unsucessfully for jade on the beach and tour the jade factory. turns out jade doesnt look like jade when you find it so e had no chance, regardless ellie tried to sell her stones but had no takers!
then we headed to Fox glacier for our helihike. sel opted for the full day hike but i wanted the amazing views of the glacier. there was a lot of cloud but the ride was still stunning. we even flew over victoria falls, a waterfall thet disappears beneath the glacier. we were on the ice for nearly 3 hours (choppers were late!) and got to hike around ice caves arches and rivers. all of which were an amazing blue colour. must say i looked very fetching in my boots and crampons with my sock pulled up over my trousers!
the next day we walked to the franz josef glacier face, which was a bit bigger but basically the same. we also walked around matheson lake - which has an amazing view of the mountains. we went to reflection island but the clouds and wind meant no reflection!
