Greetings people, I have finally got my hands on the keyboard so welcome to Beth's first blog! (Edited by Dan)
So as you can probably tell from the photograph (not one of ours I might add) we're now in Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and not a whole lot else. After a happy yet necessarily conservative reunion at Delhi airport, Dan and I are again together, YEY! We only spent a couple of nights at 'Hotel Relax' in Delhi and I had the pleasure of having my own personal tour guide to show me the 'delights' that are the Red Fort and a big Mosque, plus a ride on the metro which was probably the highlight given it had air con. Anyway Delhi, especially backpackerville, is pretty grim but hey ho, onwards we go and Agra is a little less frantic and a bit cleaner.
So what of Agra? Well it's hot an I am one very sweaty Betty right now, thankfully Dan is looking past this as he's in the same boat (Thanks! Ed.) But our little 'Shanti Lodge' is ideal as we're literally a stone's throw from the Taj (which indians are obsessed with by the way) and there's a cute little restaurant on the roof that overlooks it.
So we've put a big tick in the box and done that today - yesterday we took a rickshaw round Agra to see what else it has to offer which mainly involved helping our driver get his gas tokens by feigning interest in a load of marble tat - who buys this stuff I have no idea though we did see some westerners buying a massive replica of the Taj for the best part of 500 quid!! Mental.
In the afternoon Dan and I took a photography lesson from a 13 year old camel guide who could work our camera better than us! He took some really classic photos of me and dan 'jumping over' and 'picking up' the Taj Mahal - so we'll ry to get them uploaded soon for you to have a giggle at.
In general people here are friendly, we've met a couple of really lovely people who just want to chat and find out about us (apparently we look French) but for the most part everyone wants something from you, be it your money, a photo of you (because you're white) or the damn clothes off your back!! As a female I'm getting a lot of stares too but given I'm one of the nosiest starers at home I feel quite comfortable in trying to outstare them!!
We're off to Varanasi tonight to hopefully see some dead burning bodies floating down the Ganges (delightful), which has no oxygen in it - so can't see me getting the bikini out just yet!
So hope you are all ok at home, though guess by now lots of you are jetting off on summer hols to more luxurious parts of the world. Have fun anyway. Lots of love, Beth and Dan xxx
