Hello! So it's my turn to blog again and since Daniel's last entry (which I notice seem to increasingly take the mickey out of muggins here!) I have actually discovered that one Mr Dong actually completed a walk of the Great Wall several years ago - that'll teach him for trying to be a smart alec with me!
Right so what news of late.. well after a whistle stop tour of Shanghai (where the highlight for us was going to the Grand Hyatt for a cocktail on their 56th floor bar - very expensive and very swanky and we felt like utter tramps in our sweaty sightseeing gear but what the hell you only live once and no one seemed to notice. Plus we got a free view of the cityscape which was an added bonus) we got a twenty hour train journey to Hong Kong.
Thanks to the generous hospitality of Alex (our friend from back home who handily lives out here) and her boyfriend Terence, we've had a wicked 6 days here. We've seen and eaten loads despite the bad weather. In fact Dan and I got to experience our first Typhoon level 8 warning (the highest!) while we were here (for those of you not up on your meterological terms that means "batten down the hatches people a storm's a comin'"! So we had to cut our visit to the temple of 10,000 buddhas short and hurry home in the pouring rain only for it to stop raining as soon as we got back - sods law eh!
However the rain managed to hold off long enough over the past two days for us to get out and about, especially for some much needed retail therapy at the Ladies Market here. Heaven! I managed to remain fairly restrained, until this morning when the urge to head back for another handbag got too much and I dragged Daniel off again for another round of bartering.
We've also done the obligatory tourist stuff such as Avenue of the Stars (where we discovered my hands are indeed not as big as Jackie Chan's) and the Star Ferry. But having two personal tours guides with us means we've done plenty of other cool stuff involving lots of eating, drinking and shopping - wahoooo! It's also been lovely to see a friendly familiar face and catch up with Alex too and we will certainly miss being able to put our weary feet up on the sofa as we crash land back into the world of dormitories and shared bathrooms as we now make our way to the Vietnam border.
