Started off good this week as rents got my phone working out here, so spent a few hours here and there texting some people to see if they were all ok. So feel free to txt me now!
One problem with this week was that the schools had started up again so when we came to do the training in the afternoon session lots of the kids turned up really late because schools were finishing at different times. Was a bit annoying. Training had generally gone really well though with the lads being great as normal, though one of my players in the U12's got sent off in the match yesturday for hitting some other lil kid!
We had anouther couple of trips, one down the beach on wednesday where we missed the afternoon training as we couldnt be bothered to do it! and then on Saturday we went to this 5 star hotel on the beach and paid then a few ghana cedis to get into use the pool area, was really posh place, roughing it in Africa indeed
Dont think that this was just a usual week though as on Thursday the rains that had caused extensive flooding around Africa hit us as we were out doing a special coaching thing for strikers! Just as we started these ominous looking clouds came over head and suddenly it was all very dark. Then without warning just as we started training a torrentual downpore ensued! Me, Pete and Dave ran under a tree whereas the players just stayed out and kicked a ball about in the rain! The rain then got harder and harder and within a minute or two the pitch was flooded and little rapids were appearing all over it! Some guy beckoned me over to this mosque that had some shelter but the rains just got faster and the wind picked up. Were completely soaked through. Dave made a run for it early but i stayed back thinking i could wait it out. After anouther 5 mins of continued and fastening rain realising it wasnt going to stop i made a run for it.
Darted from house to house trying to avoid the huge rivers but still soaked through. In the end i had to run across the pitch, as i did my ankle went straight under the water, it was already ankle deep! Got across the road and then went down the backroads towards home, these small dirt paths had turned into huge cascading rivers that plunged down the path. Had to jump from side to side, occasionally dipping in, the water was like knee deep. Managed to get home where i basically stripped down and sat in the living room with loads of people in just a towell in darkness as the electric was off again! Took over as the most bizarre experience so far.
Been sunny and so hot ever since! We even played a match the next day for Pete's leaving and we drew 2-2. Didnt score this time but set up the equaliser with this little flick pass that caused a few players from the side to run on. Was hilarious. Sad to see Pete go though as he was completely mad! Havent met more of a kid at his age of 44 before!
Anyways yeah thats about it, got 6 weeks left. Should be doing some teaching in schools in the next week or two which should be fun.
Hope everyone is good and settling into uni,
Ben x
