Gateway to both the Milford and Doubtful Sounds.
The first was Milford - we did this as a day trip, which included a 1 1/2 hr cruise. We saw more dolphins and waterfalls and it was a glorious sunny (but cold) day. Lovely!
However, I think the best scenery was along the way - Mirror Lakes were very nice (and did indeed have perfect reflections.....just like mirrors!); and the view from the top of the Key Summit Track was amazing and definitely worth the effort.
The following day we joined an overnight cruise along Doubtful Sounds - "same same but different" to Milford Sounds. More isolated (we had to get a boat then a bus BEFORE getting to our cruise boat); felt slightly grander in scale; and as you can see from the photos, a lot wetter!
Still, we didn't let a bit of rain spoil things for us - in fact, I think it made it more atmospheric. Besides, this area gets up to on average, 7m of rain each year - so we were seeing it in it's natural state!!
All in all, a very enjoyable trip. Oh, and I beat our American room mate at Monopoly (not bad considering at one point he virtually owned the whole board)!!!!
