We stopped enroute at Hamilton to see the hot air balloons taking part in the Waikato Balloon Festival. Some great designs - the best being Darth Vader. Take a look at the cool pics!
Anyway, the first thing you notice when you arrive in Rotorua is the smell - this is one of NZ's most dynamic thermal areas and there is a lot of sulphur in the air!!! Just when you think you're getting used to it, a gust of wind sends a strong whiff your way, and you realise you haven't!
Needless to say, we visited many thermal areas (Hell's Gate, Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland) so that we could enjoy the sight of seeing steaming water and boiling mud! Great stuff.
We learnt about the power of previous eruptions at the Buried Village of Te Wairoa - in 1886, Mt Tarawera decided to dump several metres of ash over a very wide area.
We also went white water rafting which meant going over a 7 metre high waterfall (the highest commerically run waterfall in the world apparently). To say I shat myself is an understatement but boy was it fun!!
