Ok, already missing a day - a bit lame at such an early stage i know (ben). Anyway let's see if I can remember as far back as yesterday...
So exciting thing no 1 was picking up the car (thanks to Nick & Jane, Carl & Katy, Tab) which was even better than expected, although driving through Paris traffic back to the hotel for our bags was a bit of a struggle. Even worse was trying to park in a spot which Jean Luc assured me was plenty big enough but, after an Austin powers style effort which ended up with both ends touching other cars and the front still jutting out, he finally agreed it wasn't!
Long drive down boring autoroute later and, after a very uninspiring stop in Le mans for lunch, we took a cross country route to Saumur where we reckoned it must be beer o'clock! Found a bar on a beautiful cobbled place then briefly wandered the streets and back to the car.
The drive from Saumur to Angers, along the north bank of the Loire, was simply stunning. Beautiful landscape, watercolour skies and the hot evening sun... Top down obviously! Photos in day 4 album!
Checked in to hotel in Angers (thank you Jason & Rossella), quick change then out to explore. Angers is a really lovely town; loads of little streets to get lost in (& 3 sephora's!! - Jen) Ended up eating at a little cafe that was apparently nameless - had been recently opened by Angers' only Michelin starred chef as recommended by the concierge. To walk off our gourmet burgers and beers we took a long route through the town (so long that we even missed the bars) and so finished the night off back at the hotel with a bottle of wine and some chocolate!
Day 5: Lazy morning. Bit rainy outside... Not so bad it put us off visiting La Maison De Vin Angers before leaving! Via a mini wine tasting we sussed out a couple of vineyards we wanted to visit. We set off via wine country... Two vineyards and 18 wine bottles (in the car boot) later we felt we had given the Loire a half decent stab and headed over to the Chateau in Oiron to see our friend Claire's sculpture in an exhibition there.
Beautiful chateau. Majority of the pieces were a bit too weird for our tastes. Must say Claire's work stole the show. If you haven't seen it check out: http://www.claire-morgan.co.uk/
...on to bordeaux. More boring autoroute, although as we approached Bordeaux the weather improved and we had blue sky again. Check in to hotel and (another) traumatic parking experience later, we hot footed it out to find somewhere to eat.
So here we are eating outside and drinking down a lovely bottle of Bordeaux red whilst I'm blogging. I think Jen's bored now so best go now. Promise we won't forget tomorrow...
Much love B&J xx
PS just eating gorgeous grub next to group of men drinking a bottle or few of rose and then what appears to be creme de menthe topped with Perrier. That would NOT happen back home...
