So today we had a fairly long drive to Vegas, not just to Vegas itself, but just outside. Boulder City and lake mead was where we were heading. We would be covering another big chunk of Route 66 leading up to a place called Kingman. We would be passing through where Route 66 was born and where some believe the Route began its rebirth in 1970. That morning, we set off heading for Walmart to get something healthy to eat, we both had some fruit and bought ourselves a vegetable picnic tray thing with ranch dressing. These we would keep for now. We drove the road towards the Grand Canyon again, but this we carried onwards toward Nevada, not part of Route 66, but Vegas was there, it wasn't a choice of whether to go or not. Vegas is Vegas. We headed through some forested areas to start with and had a portion of the Route on gravel and red dirt. We passed the bearizona park and came to a little town called Williams, which had a long street of uninterrupted Route 66 buildings and shops. It looked like it had been stuck in time for 20 odd years, we then noticed they had a street market too, like a boot sale. So we stopped to have a little look round there, we didn't find much, but I can never resist a boot sale. Then we set off again and reached Seligman, and there were some really cool places there. On the way, Marie fed me my vegetables and dip. In Seligman there was a shop with mannequins on the top of it, a converted gas station, a shop with a museum in it and a gift shop with a barbers in it. The place was crazy!! We obviously visited all of the above, the museum had motorbikes and old cars in it, the old Gas Station had a huge amount of retro signs in it, and the barbers unfortunately wasn't open, I could've done with a haircut as well. Anyway, we bought a couple of presents for Zac and then set off again. We stopped at an old rest stop in the desert which was part of a yearly Route 66 rally and had a quick look round, and stopped at a vista point where the Colorado river was in the distance before we reached our destination. We got through the final stint and made it to Lake Mead and Boulder City which was just a few miles further down the road. We got some dinner in Boulder City in the form of Burger King and then made our way to lake mead, where we would be staying the night, we got a little spot right on the edge of the river and it was really hot tonight, 28 degrees, I was sweating while putting the tent up, anyway, we turned in for the night and were ready for tomorrow.
