After a few days in Guayaquil, we travelled out to Montañita for some much needed sun. We found a wooden shack overlooking the beach and enjoyed 3-days of sun, surf, fresh fruit and cocktails!
We then took a nightmare bus journey up to Otavala (3 buses, windows that don´t open, 16 hours and no sleep!), where we spent a day walking around the biggest market in South america, seeing the animal market filled with cows, pigs, dogs and guinuea pigs. The rest of the market was had stalls selling everything from fruit, veg and grubs to bracelets, shoes, hammocks and chairs!
In Quito, we decided to road trip it to the Equator. Our mode of transport was a moped, as we battled through the busy streets of the countries capital and along the bus filled highways, maxing out at 20kmph on the uphill sections! We arrived at a small museum and were treated to a traditional dance show. We then took a short tour seeing the difference the equator makes to human weight and strength, the flushing of water and I managed to stand an egg on a nail (I am the egg man!). We also saw a few examples of shrunken heads, which were a little disgusting!
On the journey back in to Quito we got drenched, but continued to a great look-out point over the city. Finally, we got back, wet and cold and decided coffee and cake (lemon meringue pie and chocolate brownie meringue... Awesome) was the remedie. It worked! Full of cake we went for a 2 hour Salsa lesson, which was something we have been longing to do and was well worth the wait. We now want to practice every day and look for more classes and maybe even a club to try working our magic?
A 3 hour bus trip landed us in Baños (baths) where we spent a day on mountain bikes visiting loads of waterfalls. It was hard work at points, with some long uphill sections, but that also meant some great downhill sections as well. At points we had flashbacks of ´Death Road.´ We eventually arrived at Pailón del Diablo, which was a beautiful waterfall, set in the trees and we were able to walk up alongside it and even stand behind it. The force and power of the water was unbelievable and it was a real thrill to be able to stand so close and get soaked by such a force of nature. In the end, we decided the road back was more up than down and managed to hail a bus to take us and our bikes back to Baños.
We have 1 week left in Ecuador and South America before we travel up to Guatamala to meet Richard. We are planning to travel to Riobamba, where we hope to meet Jack´s parents, take the train del diablo and then spend a few days in Cuenca.
