We returned to Rio to catch a flight towards the Argentine boarder and were treated to an awesome view as we left Rio with the plane flying over the city giving us a view down over the shoulder of Christ to the city below, the Sugar Loaf, our hill and the beaches. Was a picture perfect way to get a final view of the city.
As we approached Foz de Iguazu we had a magnificent view of the falls that appeared to be a giant cauldron of mist and spray where the river disappered in to a giant hole in the earth. This was our base for the next few days.
The next day we were up early to travel to the Brazilian side of the falls. We started a way down river, but gradually got closer to the thunderous noise of the falls. The view kept improving until eventually we were lost in a sea of spray on a walkway that went out across the falls, showering us (literally) in water and noise from this impressive beast of nature.
After travelling back to our hostel and checking out we headed for the boarder. This we were told would be a big effort including 5 buses and over 2hrs of our time. We managed to get a free lift to the boarder, got our exit stamp within 5 mins and then caught a bus to take us in to Argentina (he even waited whilst we got a new stamp in our passport). Was a cool experience getting ourselves over the boarder and now we were in the land of steaks and wine... To celebrate we went for steak and wine, getting enough to feed an army! It... was... Awesome!
The next day we were up early to get to the Argentine falls. There is a lot more to the falls on this side, so we made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy, first heading down the lower tracks, where we enjoyed views over some of the smaller falls, before ending up beneath one of the big falls for our first soaking of the day! We then travelled by train to the upper tracks where we walked out across the river (on boardwalks) until we were eventually over the start of the falls (what we had seen from the plane). It was breathtaking to witness the raw power of mother nature, getting several showers, and being able to appreciate her beauty, with rainbows and flocks of birds dancing around the falls edges.
It has been an amazing few days, seeing the falls from both sides and finally getting in to Argentina. We don´t like things too easy, so our next few days will hopefully take us to a remote nature reserve in the north of Argentina where we could see Caymans, anacondas and over 300 types of birds...
