After a few hours sleep we woke up around 3am where we got ourselves out of bed (or atleast moved our beds around) and set off driving - it took us an hour to get up and drive to the end of east cape road - where there was a small area to park and you could just see the lighthouse and it's light. We sat and sorted a few bits out and headed up the long staircase to the east cape lighthouse. As you reach the top you can understand why people make the 750 step walk to the top - the sea opens out in front of you with nothing but water until the time line, making you the first people
in the world to witness that days sunrise. We sat cold and wind slapped for the next hour slowly watching the horizon lighten with the colours of the rainbow and slowly lighten the east coastline until finally the sun crept up behind the low laying cloud in the distance. This was deffinetly worth the early morning, the 1500 step round walk and the hours wait in what felt like Gail force wind! Just being able to be the first people to see the sunrise and having that memory of those few hours watching it will join some of my favourite memories of our trip.
After our walk back down the steps we jumped in the car and headed back along the road to the place we camped a couple of nights ago - this time we arrived at 2pm and with lots of time to spare we had a relax in the car and cooked some food. This was soon followed by a much needed early night!
