As expected it's been a while since we last updated the blog….
After the last instalment we spent 3 days on a tall ship in the Whitsundays and it was awesome! The fish and coral were brilliant at all the snorkelling sites and I even got to swim with another sea turtle and we had dolphins swimming alongside the boat. You can see how great it all was in the photos.
Upon returning to Airlie Beach we spent the afternoon barbequing with some of the others from the boat, waiting for our overnight Greyhound to 1770. This was the setting for my first surf lesson in Oz (getting better but still no pro) and the Chopperoos (scooters that look like choppers). There were at least 50 of us riding along in a procession through the very small town with Lois lagging behind at the back (she was scared when she went over 20kmh!). Probably not going to be buying scooters in Vietnam on this performance, but at least we got to see wild kangaroos.
We next headed to Hervey Bay to visit Fraser Island on a two day guided tour (we know we took the easy option). As those of you who've been already know, Fraser Island is very cool - driving on the beach, massive waves, shark infested sea, and some spectacular rainforest and lakes. As I'm writing this I have just realised that there's not much in Australia that you'd call average!
Next stop Noosa, a pretty surf town that is very expensive! We couldn't afford the restaurants on our budget but we still loved the place! From here we spent the day at Australia Zoo (home of the crocodile hunter) and saw (and fed) some animals. For those of you who enjoyed Steve Irwin's tv show you'll be pleased to know the guys at the zoo still feed the big crocs by hand! While we were in Noosa we also saw some wild koalas and some sea turtles, but didn't have the bloody camera!
From Noosa we travelled to Brisbane. We just looked at the photos of Brisbane and even we were bored by them so we're not going to subject you to them - trust us, Brisbane's nice, but it is just another city!
Surfer's Paradise was much more fun! This was the scene of a much more successful surf lesson (nearing semi-pro now), an awesome day at Wet-n-Wild (I'm sure they make the water slides bigger now than they used to), and some relaxing on the beach. Byron Bay next and Lois even got some blurry proof of me surfing! We spent the day at the Nimbin Mardi Gras which wasn't as fun as we expected, but it was still an experience. Better than that was spotting dolphins off the coast as we walked up to the Byron Bay lighthouse in the red hot midday sun! And in Byron we could even afford to go into some of the cafes!
We're now in Sydney and are moving into our last week in Australia. It's been brilliant!!
Hope everyone back home is doing well!
