Into Oz
Hello again everyone, we hope you are all well and enjoying yourselves back home.I know we are really, really rubbish at keeping up to date with these blogs but we are trying and hopefully you are enjoying looking at the photos anyway! We are thinking of you all back home - honestly!
It doesn't seem like we've been in Australia for nearly 4 weeks, but time does fly when you're having fun! And what a fun 4 weeks it's been!
We landed in Sydney after very little sleep and I decided that the best thing to do would be to wander around as much of the city as possible… we regretted that the next day but we did love Sydney. After a couple of days of sightseeing we made our way to Canberra vowing to go back to Sydney on our loop before flying out of the country. Canberra isn't as bad as everyone had told us, but we left as soon as our visas were in our passports and made our way to Melbourne on the overnight greyhound.
We spent a few days in Melbourne sightseeing - the old gaol where Ned Kelly was hanged, St Kilda's, the sky platform at night, and of course Ramsey Street! Where we met one of the hot blonde girls - just in case you were wondering who the random blonde girl was that we are posing with in our photos! Before we left Melbourne we had a few beers with my old mate Matt and we were up early for another flight to Alice Springs (we still haven't learned to book later flights).
From Alice Springs we did a 3-day tour around Uluru, Kings canyon and the Olgas. We camped under the stars in swags (not much more than a roll matt) and thoroughly enjoyed our trip - there is some amazing scenery in the outback. We returned to Alice Springs exhausted and went out for beers with the other guys on our tour before a not so early flight to Darwin.
We had a brilliant time in Darwin - highlights were the massive crocs in the zoo, feeding small crocs with fishing lines, big snakes, and a trip to Lichfield national park with a jumping croc cruise on the Adelaide River! Probably the best day was our tour of Lichfield - we had a proper Aussie guide called Joey and he did an awesome Steve Irwin impression!! It turned out the snake was only rubber but that didn't appease the German guy who Joey had thrown the snake at! And by the way - when it rains in Darwin it sure does rain!
We made our way to the East coast and to a very rainy Cairns. Even with the rain we braved a day trip to the outer reef and did some scuba diving and snorkelling - we had an underwater camera with us so you can see some of the amazing things that we saw. If you're wondering what the fetching blue lycra suits are in our pictures, they're stinger suits as it's still stinger season in Oz. We had been planning to do the trip on Lois' birthday, but the sea conditions were forecast to get worse by then. Instead, on her birthday we hired the world's smallest car and went to the wildlife reserve and saw lots of lions, tigers, and a cheetah (again more photos). Even with the crappy weather Cairns was awesome!
We started our epic Greyhound journey to Sydney with a short leg to Mission Beach where we did a full days white water rafting on the Tully River… Lois still has the bruises to prove it! But we survived and it was a quality day. I would not recommend swimming the rapids if they offer it to you though!
As I write this blog we are sitting in the sunny Airlie Beach waiting to start a 3-day sailing trip to the Whitsundays… hopefully our next update will be sooner than this!!
Thinking of you all, Ben and Lois xxx
