Today we made our way to Italy. To save money we had been trying to avoid paying too many tolls, we usually avoided the highways and stuck to state roads which generally followed the highways anyway, but we soon realised in Italy that most of the state roads are hilly and windy, while the toll roads just take you through the hills in tunnels, and journeys that should have only taken us half an hour were taking nearly 3, so we had to bite the bullet and start paying tolls. But once we were on the freeway we drove for most of the day and tried to get as close to Florence as possible, so we could make it in time to meet Bek's parents on the east coast. We arrived in Florence in the evening, and found a campsite high up on a hill in a village called Fiesole, but they wanted to charge us heaps for the sight, so we went to take off to find somewhere else…when the car wouldn't start! We had been pushing the car too much by driving all day then taking it up massive hills and it had overheated again, so we had to sit and wait for it to cool, and by the time we could take off again, it was getting too late to find another campsite. We drove around the corner from the campsite and found a spot on the side of a road that overlooked the Tuscan hills and decided to park there for the night for free. Our dinner was cold baked beans and gherkins, and Bek just had to get over her fear/embarrassment of going to the toilet in bushes, but the views from our van made up for it!
