Our ferry to Bari wasn't leaving until 11pm that night so we had a whole day to kill.We stayed at the campsite until 2p.m then headed to Lapad, a peninsula in Dubrovnik where all the beaches and hotels are situated. We found some free parking near the beach, had some lunch at a really nice restaurant (including having a shot of homemade brandy) and watched a movie on the laptop until it was time to go to the port.
We got to the port of Dubrovnik at about 8pm and waited in line for about 2 hours to get the van onto the ferry. Our van got held up for about half an hour while they put smaller cars on, and when we finally were able to park up, we grabbed our sleeping bags and pillows and were shocked to find hundreds of people, mainly Italians, camped up everywhere on the deck of the boat.Because we got there so late, all the comfy couches and indoor areas had been taken up, and we ended up on the very top deck of the boat, out in the open just under the huge exhaust pipes of the ship!We slipped into our sleeping bags and zipped them up tight, tucked our backpacks underneath us for extra cushioning from the hard deck floor and attempted to sleep for the night. After about 3-4 hours of sleep (if we were lucky), we woke up to the sunset over the Mediterranean with the coast of Bari in the distance. We got to the port at 8 in the morning and found a place to park for the day.We spent a little time walking around the old city, and checked out the church and statue of St Nicholas (a.k.a Santa Claus) but our priority was staying close to the port so we could line up extra early for the next ferry to Greece. We ended up being the first car onto the ferry and Bek raced up to the deck to make sure she could find a nice comfy, quiet and dark spot for us to camp for the night. It ended up that we didn't need to race around, as the ferry from Bari to Patras was really quiet, with only a handful of people saying on the deck.We found a relatively comfortable place to sleep, underneath a table and chairs, and were smart enough to bring our mattresses from the van for extra comfort. We met some other Aussie travellers on the ferry and spent some time talking to them, sharing travelling stories, and it ended up that they were all on the same ferry as us from Dubrovnik. The ferry was a million times better that the previous one, it was almost like a cruise ship, it had a little pool to swim in, café, bar, casino, disco and massage chairs so even though the ferry trip was 16 hours long, we were kept busy.
