We left Airlie Beach at 12:00am and boarded a Greyhound which dropped us off in 1770 at 10:00am the following day. We had a courtesy shuttle bus ready and waiting for us when we arrived which took us to our new home (hostel) about 5 minutes drive out of town. I use the word town loosely as it was such a small place. The hostel was nice but really quite 'hippy' with insence burning and hairy airpits on show (not just the men). We had a decent little cabin though so all was good.
Like a few of the other places we have visited in Australia you arrive in small little towns which you would not necessarily stop off at unless there is a set activity to do there. 1770 was no different, with the activity here being 'Scooteroo'.
'Scooteroo' is a tour of the town of 1770 and Agnes Water on 50cc motorbikes which are customised to look like 'choppers' (like a Harley Davidson). To complete the look whilst riding these beasts you get given a leather jacket and some temporary tattoo's. This was an activity which appealed to me and Joe but not so much to the girls. So after a long bus journey Belle and Koo headed for an afternoon nap and myself and Joe became Hells Angels.
Leather jacket - check, fake tattoo's - check, mean looking moped - check, we were ready for the off. A group of about 40 hells angels set off on a three hour tour of 1770 and Agnes Water. We rode along coastal roads, inland where we saw Kangaroos and then down to Agnes Water coast to watch a sun set. It is one of two places in Aus (if I remember correctly) where the sun sets over water, it was pretty impressive to say the least (pictures to follow but I need Joe's camera). One final ride back up to 'base camp' to drop the scooters off and our 3 hours as bad ass bikers had come to an end, fun times.
The next day we decided to head down to the beach so after a shuttle bus into town and a stroll, we arrived at the beach. Once again it was a picturesque strip of sand which went on for as far as the eye could see. Canadian Andy and James had travelled down with us from Airlie beach so the six of us topped up or worked on our tan, relaxed and the boys even had a dip in the sea. For dinner the hostel put on a 'free' BBQ for those staying at the hostel, however you had to buy a drink, so thats what we did and once again it was the Australian speciality that Belle has become so fond of, beef sausages.
Another small town ticked off the list, if you go to 1770 do 'scooteroo' as there is not much else there. The beach is a nice beach but Australia do a good beach and there are plenty more places on the east coast for this, that said it was couple of relaxed days after the 'Clipper', something we not doubt needed.
