So after leaving the not so impressive stop off of Kaitiriri we were hoping for somewhere better in Westport. Lets not beat around the bush with this, it wasn't. If anything the town itself, although bigger was not as pretty as the coastal Kaitiriri.
The hostel we stayed at though was better than the last, with a nice homely feel to it. We had also managed to bag ourself a double room for pretty much the same price as a dorm bed which was a bonus. After checking in and sorting ourselves out, we sat a chatted to a Welsh couple we had met in Nelson, Kelly & Adam. After spending a good hour or so, sat in the warm (ish) early evening in the hostel garden, we ventured to the shop to get some dinner.
The bus driver had organised a three legged pub crawl for some evening entertainment but with Belle still not feeling great we gave this a miss. To be honest it was a great excuse not to go on it. Instead we took the old person option and spent the night in the hostel lounge, in front of the fire - yes we know we sound about 70, but you can't drink every night, we just haven't got the money for it. In the lounge was also an epic collection of VHS video's, a huge collection, with some titles not as dated as you would expect.
Whilst sat chatting in the lounge between ourselves, a friendly American girl came and joined the conversation, where the usual questions and answer were exchanged. The highlight of our conversation was that she was telling us how she had met a couple of people with the unmistakeable scouse accent, but instead of calling them scousers, she thought they were called "sausages", which amused the four of us no end, bless her.
Any way that was the evening and we retired to bed before an earlyish start the next morning. It was nice going to sleep that night not having to worry if we had some heavy sleepers in our room, a decent nights sleep was near enough a given.
And that, as they say, was that. Westport was again not somewhere we would have chose to stop and wouldn't go back there, but the hostel and good company made up for it. Oh and I nearly forgot to mention a little stop we made on the way to Westport that afternoon. It was a little cafe in the middle of nowhere, which sold cakes, sandwhich, pies and ice cream, which came highly recommended by the driver. Doesn't sound very exciting I know but the ice cream was awesome and lived up to the glowing review. We had two 'one scoopers' (which were actually two big scoops) of hokey pokey ice cream, which was exceedingly good, Mr. Kipling standards - if he made ice cream.
