Hola!
Ill now tell you about the time i spent in the jungle, staying with the incredible family of Delphine. They are a Quicha (i think thats spelt right) tribe, who are resisting western influences to live with the forest, no electricity, self sufficient, they have an incredible way of life we could all learn so much from´!
On arrival, the small housing area couldnt have blended in to the forest any more than it did, a small hike up a rough path, and it opened out into a small clearing you can see in the photographs. The family all live in one main area, close to a kitchen and candlelit seating area. There are hammocks outside, looking onto the beautful, indescribable view of the jungle.
We ate all our meals with the family. Most people should know my fussiness with fish, ive always hated the taste and smell, but the first meal was the freshest, best tasting meal I have ever eaten (almost) I cant remmeber the type of fish, but it was served grilled with fresh vegetables after a soup, which is traditionally served with freshly popped, hot popcorn instead of bread, yum!
The camp sits atop a small hill, which followed down leads to a beautiful clear river, we swam here for hours, the sons and daughtors teaching us how to ´cannonball´properly, and picking up the biggest milipede ive ever seen when it began to swim towards us. Making us feel very tourist like. I picked it up too, it was alot heavier than it looked. took my back to my í want to be an entomologist´days...
We explored the camp more, thereare chickens, tiny chicks, a very annoying rooster, spider nests, everywhere a tiny dog called Eramoso (spelt wrong im afraid). We also got to taste sugar cane, which is delicious! yum yum!
Delphine, the father is so interesting, he navigates the forest like we walk around out own homes, each plant is used for a natural aid or material, he built the whole of his house himself, and i could have listened to him for hours, talking about the history of his family and why they settled here. He is also persistant in his will to reject the many offers they get of modernisation. Apparntly there are plans to have electicity accesable to them, but he repeatedly rejects them, keeping his family´s history and way of life alive.
Ill now upload some more photos and fill you in on the rest of our jungle stay in the next blog, apologies for the spelling and grammar mistakes! my excuse is that the keyboards here are different..honest!
Lots of love, Beak xxx
