DAY 5 OTTAWA
Caught the greyhound at 8 this morning (meant getting up at 6:30 wasnt happy lol) it took about 2 and a half hours to get here but it was cool getting to see the change in scenery as we drove along. first impressions as we pulled into the city...dump but when we got further downtown we could see huge old looking buildings which obviously were worth visiting! first stop was the hostel to check in. luckily nobody used our room last night so we could check in right away. the hostel is the city's old jail so it still has all its original fixtures and the rooms are the cells. its pretty cool! we're staying in a 2 person cell its cozt to say the least lol but fun!
Just like with montreal and quebec we soent the day exploring the city. you may think all i'm doing is just walking round which i guess is true but it really is the best way to see the city and it may seem boring to some people but trust me its not! theres so much in this place to see! we stopped off at a scottish pub first to refuel. it was so cute. all the staff were in kilts and they even had haggis on the menu! i had shephards pie (not as good as mums and dads) and apple crumble for dessert (again mums and dads was better lol). once i got over the fact we had had lunch in a scottish pub lol we went and bought stamps, sorry i went and bought $46 worth of stamps!!! damm postcard sending lol. only joking! after all that was done we eventually started on our walking tour of the city. we hit the art centre, the royal canadian mint (the one in winnipeg puts out 750 coins a second!!!), the notre damm basilica (they seem to be everywhere) and lots of statues! we didnt actually go in these buildings just took pics lol and wandered round the outside. theres lots of war memorials around ottawa so we had a look at some of them. as we were walking around we saw this statue on top of a hill and there looked to be seats in front like a stage at the foot of it. so we decided it would be a good idea to climb to the top which it was. the view was amazing!!! u could see most of the city and it was starting to clear up so we cld see quite far. we figured we needed some pics of us 2gether so we spent about 20mins playing with the self timers on our cameras trying to get the perfect pic. in reality it was suze setting up the camera and me pressing the button and bombing up about 15 steep steps to reach suze and the statue in 10 secs b4 the camera went off! it was funny to say the least but it worked!
on our way to parliament hill (the main attraction) we wandered through a park and saw the city from the other side. the parliament is HUGE!!!!! kinda reminded me of westminster a bit with big ben. we both took a gazillion pics of it! i discovered the digital zoom on ma new camera so i played with that.
one thing u notice about ottawa is theres quite a lot of guys dressed in uniform from all the different forces. we saw some at the parliament building and decided to follow them on the tour but the queue was too long and we decided they werent that hot so we left.
we hit a few more war memorials including that of the unknown soldier. the tomb is right in the city centre and has a big monument behind it marking where he is buried. it was quite sad reading all the plaques!
we headed to hard rock cafe for dinner which was yummy. we had some cocktails also yummy lol. then made our way back to the hostel. 2nite sad to say was laundry night so we had a thrilling evening of laundry and writing postcards.
still think quebec city is ma fave city but ottawa comes a close second! we'll see wot else we discover 2morro!
DAY 6
Had a lie in this morning then headed off about 12 to grab some lunch in an wee irish pub was so yummy! the weather wasnt great, all grey and rainy luckily we did pretty much everything yday. we headed to the other side of town 2day and went to see rideau falls which was pants! it was just a damm. then kept on walking to find the prime ministers house but you couldnt really see anything it was covered by trees. right next to the prime ministers house though was rideau hall, the place where the govenor general of canada lives. the grounds were gorgeous all the trees were orange and red. lots of famous people have planted trees there like nelson mandela, J F kennedy and just for u bro the chief scout guy of canada. we went up to the big house but when we started to walk around the side we got interceted by a security guard...it was off limits lol!
we slowly headed back to the hostel after that. we did try find a movie theatre but surprisngly theres no good ones in the capital of centre!! so we stopped off at a supermarket then headed back to the hostel. we dumped our stuff then went out to dinner in a little 50's diner called zacs. we spent our night watching movies in our room, drive me crazy and the hannah montanna movie lol. it was nice just to chill out 2day and get ready for our day of travel 2morro!
