So after another comfy nights sleep in a YHA (Riviera backpackers) we packed up and set off towards Phillip Island (where all the penguins live!) We left about 9.30am and drove for about 3-4 hours passing some more little towns along the way including a place called Stratford!
We arrived on Phillip Island at about 3pm and the island was beautiful. We drove along the Bunarong coastal drive and looked over the cliffs to see a bright turquiose sea..awesome! We headed to Phillip Island YHA, Amaroo park and at $30 a night it was pretty steep but we ended up getting a free upgrade to our own wooden cabin with our own kitchen, bathroom and TV so we could watch neighbours!!! Weather was not too bad, it picked up since Lakes Entrance so hopefully tomorrow will be even better. So that night we headed to Summerlands beach on the other side of the island to watch the Penguin Parade. About sunset, 9pm a few tiny penguins ('Little' or 'Fairy' penguins) came in from the sea after a days fishing to return to their nests to feed their hungry chicks. After 1 group came out, others followed suit and waddled out of the water and up the beach to their nests. It was so cold but such an amazing sight. After 2 or 3 groups came out of the water we went back up to the boardwalk to see them burrow into their nests. It was amazing to see them up close. They're tiny, only 33cm tall when adults with blue backs and white bellies. Just when we thought we'd seen enough wildlife for one night, two wallabies hopped past us aswell! Brilliant, brilliant night.
