Beki and Steves travels
we arrived in chang rai early afternoon at the PDA centre and had lunch in a restaurant called cabbages and condoms which helps promote awarness to the local people to reduce AIDs and lower population growth. you could get free condoms at the end in either thai size or international size.... we had a talk at the PDA centre about the trek and what to expect from the hill tribe villages. We were told not to expect them in full costume and that the trek would be hard and were strongly advised to get porters. we both turned our noses up at that thought prefering to rise to the challenge. After we had stowed our valluables away we were shipped of to stay in a village at the bottom of the hills in which we had a lovely meal and played volley ball with the local kids. During dinner they played their instruments and performed a prewar dance. After we played games in english with them and tried to learn thai. Then went to bed for an early night as we started the first and hardest uphill day of trekking 2moz.
1st day of trekking
we woke up at 7.30 and had a lovely brekkie of toast and coffee to wake us up before we spent 40 mins on the back of a tractor truck which took us part way up the hill to the start of the trek. The majority of the trekking was all uphill and hard going at parts with a couple of 40min vertical climbs. however our guide "A" with his grasp and wierd take of the english language tols us that instead of elevations there were elevators and that there were 7/11 convenience stores half way up the mountain.... anyway we kinda gathered that he was messing something which we had for the whole trip along with very long winded explinations of anything...zzz but he was a kule guide. We stopped for lunch at a really ncie waterfall and unwrapped our bamboo leaf to discover patai and chicken yummy. we then treked up our 2nd elevator. when we had reached the top and started to make the decent to the 1st village our main tourguide for the whole trip "Ann" twisted her ankle and we had to walk slowly into the village which was luckily only a few mins away.
When we arrived we couldnt belived our luck we were staying at a village version of a hilton on the hill!. it was really spacious had a balcomy matress and also blanket and pillows!!! not really roughing it by any standards other than we slept in our sleeping bags.
After showers we both had a thai massage which was really lovely and the gals were great even thought a bit intimate... D of E trips should take note!
Aftr dinner we were entertained by the local school children to a traditional lisshu dance which was the village we were staying in and also an akkha one which was the village of 2moz. it was really realy nice see photos. After because it was chinese new year to our luck the villages were having a really big party and were all in traditional costume. we had a dance around a tree with a light on and tried some traditional whiskey, just a sip as it is stupidly strong. however the american lady had to outdo us all and had 3 whole shots....
after the party we walked back up the hill and crawlled into bed ready to start the next day.
DAY 2
we woke up at 8 for brekkie and after warm bread disguised as toast we had a look at the school which wasnt open because it was the holidays. I tried some chocloate icecream local variety which was made mainly with coconut which was yummy.
After a long explination by our guide and the american lady wandering off and buying a local traditional necklace something we were told not 2... we started trekking. we only trekked for 3 hours as the next village wasnt that far. We went throught a few plantations of coffee and cherrys and stopped everyso often to look at local products and plants. A nice stroll in the sun and another meal of rice and we ended up in the akkha village. Steve played local football with a reed ball with the kids and A and the local dirty baby attached itself to him climbing all up him and over him. some nice photos. after a brief walk with A and another long lecture about a tree or sumink katie fell asleep lol. we went back to our residence to do some local shopping. I bought 2 nice silver/metal bracelts and a necklace for about 2 quid.
When setting up out mozzie nets one of the gals found a massive spider and all da galys freaked out luckly me n steve we at the other end of the bamboo hut so wenrt affected. However we both we more scared when the american lady started chasing the spider with her boobies out. All boys vacated quickly!.
No one dared take a shower as it was a bucket of icky smelly water in a bamboo room. we all had a quick wash down but nothing worthy of a medal.
After another meal of rice and a game of cards. we headed into our insect infested room to bed.
Day 3
We woke up at 4am as the chickens all started crowing and the dogs barking ....... so tired lol. we got up 4 breaky at 7.30 which was pancakes yay!!!!! after waiting for A to have his breaky we set off after a long speach again, a group photo and lots of good byes.
trekking was mainly downhill and we all blitz it really well arriving for dinner a hour early even though we set off 30mins l8. the then only had 3km left in the sun it was soooooooo hot. we arrived at the end of the trek not particularly worn out but grateful it was over. We got the bus back to the PDA centre to get out stuff say goodbye to out guides pick up ann who had to go home after the second day and then on to the hotel for a lovely lovely yummy shower.
