Gday all
Headed further up the coast to Fraser Island, which is an Island off the north east coast made completely from sand, amazing place. We went on an "off road 4 wheel drive tour" for 2 days, there are no raods on the Island, all cars are to have 4wd and you drive on sand instead of road. On this we drove along the beach at 80 mph (they call it the sandy highway) walked throught the rainforest, climbed to the highest point over-looking the Island, splashed away in the "champagne pools" (these are rock pools by the side of the ocean). On the second day we headed for the desert like sand dunes when we treked through the dunes on a 5 km walk (roasting hot!), though at the end of the walk we were rewarded with THEE most beautiful emerald green lake - surrounded with sand dunes and tropical rain forest - it was just like a mirage........ We spent the afternoon running down the sand dunes and jumping straight into the lake! Check out the video on the blog of Brian doing just that.
Some locals told us to get off the "tourist track" and head to the local holiday town of 1770 - its called this as it's the first place captain Cook set foot in Queensland. It was like a scene from "home & away" really beautiful, untouched and quiet beaches. Brian spent the 2 days surfing and I spent it getting a few more freckles.
Tomorrow we are going on ultimate trip of Australia - 3 days sailing on a tall ship which will cruise around the "whitsundays" and great barrier reef. We're both looking forward to the relaxation (again!) and especially the snorkelling which is supposed to be fantastic!
Cheers B & M
