Yesterday morning we left most of our stuff at the condo in Jaco and packed for our overnight detour to Quepos. We took the public bus since it is by far the cheapest option. It's nearly impossible to find a schedule but I looked online and it seemed like a bus came at 11:15, so we got to the bus stop at 11. There are bus stops scattered throughout Jaco. Unfortunately 11:15 turned out not to be true. The bus didn't come until noon. Once on it we paid (2500 colones, $5 total for 2 people!) and then it took about 1.5 hours to get to Quepos. We took the bus back to Jaco and it was even easier. I definitely recommend taking the bus. It costs about $2.50 per person one way, so it was $5 each round trip. It's super easy and stops at the main bus station in Quepos. I've been feeling somewhat nauseous in the shuttles here but I didn't feel sick on the bus. The road from Jaco to Quepos is mostly straight and is in good condition.
Upon arrival to Quepos we immediately liked it more than Jaco. So many people have said that Quepos is a small town but it didn't feel too small. We went and got lunch at a local soda and then took a taxi to the hotel. Along the way we began to see the view. Most of the Quepos hotels are in the mountains outside of Quepos. The results are a stunning ocean view. Every restaurant we went to there had a beautiful view. We spent hours sitting on the balcony outside of our hotel room.
This morning we woke up and were going to go to Manuel Antonio national park but Kyle heard someone talking about whales and he really wanted to go see them. We decided to go talk to the hotel owner. The boats only go out once a day and luckily they were delayed because it was pouring rain. She booked us and they picked us up an hour later.
At first the ocean was rough and I felt really sick. We were going to be on the boat for 3.5 hours and I was pretty sure that I was going to throw up at some time. Luckily the storm passed and I felt better soon afterwards. A few minutes in we got to see a family of humpback whales. It was two babies and the parents. It was pretty amazing to get to see them. Later the boat took us along the coast line and then we stopped for a while to have lunch.
After 3.5 hours in the sunshine we decided we were just too tired to go to Manuel Antonio. It was in the opposite direction of where we were. If we had a hotel to go hang out at for an hour or so we would have gone but we had already checked out of the hotel. Kyle and I usually take 1 long vacation per year and he promised me that next year we can go to Quepos.
I have been liking Costa Rica. I really really liked La Fortuna, but I really loved Quepos. The views from the mountains are amazing. It has everything I want. Next year we will definitely stay there for longer. I'm already planning next year...fly into San Jose and go straight to Quepos. Travel along the coast for a bit, go check out the Caribbean side and then cross into Panama. It sucked leaving Quepos but it wasn't so hard because I have no doubt that we will be back there again.
We just got back to Jaco an hour or so ago. We'll go out to dinner soon and then hang out at the condo for the night. Tomorrow we leave around 2:30 to go back to San Jose. Vacation is almost over...but first we get to go on a coffee and chocolate tour on Tuesday.
