Today was mostly a train day. 1.5 hrs from Salzburg to Munich, 2.5 from Munich to Stuttgart, and 1.5 from Stuttgart to Strasbourg.
We were able to hang out in Munich for about 3 hours. I think we fit a lot into that time, so we did a good job. Luckily the train station was located right in the city center so we didn't have to go far for some action. The square in Munich is definitely the most active and interesting one I've seen. There were a few street musicians, which you see everywhere in Europe (even the tiny towns), but Munich also had street actors/performers. They paint their bodies and stand there very still and pose for pictures if you give them money. They were pretty creepy, mostly. This one looked like some demon out of Lord of the Rings, and one guy stuck himself inside a table, carved a hole for his head, and popped his head out (which was painted green so it looked like a watermelon or something)...it was just weird.
The COOLEST part was seeing a Mongolian duo performing. There was plenty of throat-singing, which I am a huge fan of, and never expected to see it live. If you don't know what throat singing is, I highly recommend you search for a video on Youtube... it's phenomenal.
We were lucky to run into the New Europe free walking tour just as they were about to start, so we hopped on for a little bit. We saw a bunch of churches and the building from which Kristalnacht was launched (the event which is believed to have begun the Holocaust). We climbed St. Peter's church and were able to see a 360-degree view of the city before heading back to the train station. All-in-all, not a bad layover! Right now we are on the train to Strasbourg, and I will hopefully be able to update from there!
