Hands-down, the most beautiful town we've been to. It's unbelievable. Located in the Alps, there are mountains, hills, lakes, forests, every little bit of natural beauty you could ever want. Also, as anyone who sets foot in the city for 30 seconds would know, it's the birthplace of Mozart and the location of the filming for The Sound of Music. I of course went on the "Official" Sound of Music Tour. Sure, it's touristy, overpriced and silly, but this has been my favorite movie since I was three years old. I couldn't NOT do it, so I did, and so did like 40 other people on my gigantic bus. The tour was little more than a sight-seeing tour with some Sound of Music trivia, but I would recommend it. We actually went outside the city into the mountains and a small town where we got to walk around a bit. In case any of you are Sound of Music fans, here were the places we saw:
-Mirabel Gardens, Mozart Bridge (the park where the Von Trapp kids are playing around while dressed in curtains)
-The park where the kids are climbing trees when Captain Von Trapp is driving home with the Baroness from Vienna
-The gazebo used for "Sixteen Going on Seventeen"
-The Nurnberg Abbey, the abbey which was used in the movie (we only drove by it, I guess we couldn't go in since it's still an active abbey with nuns and such)
-The church where Maria and Capt. Von Trapp got married in the movie
-The lake where the children are playing in the movie
-The mountain and hills from the beginning of the movie where Maria is singing
But really, everything was just so darn pretty. I loved it in Salzburg, and wish I could have spent longer. I also visited Mozart's birthhouse and strolled around the town (which is incredibly small for how famous it is). One night was not enough, but I got to do what I wanted to do! Tomorrow is a travel day. We taking the train from Salzburg to Munich, spending a couple of hours there, and then taking the train from Munich to Stuttgart, then Stuttgart to Strasbourg, France. I can't wait to be back in France with all of their awesome food. I'm getting sick of pastries, kebab, and various wursts!
