It was onto Lyon and, as was becoming our standard in France, into the cheapest Ibis Hotel. May have already typed this earlier, but for the benefit of anyone going to France on a budget in future, we found some Accor Hotel options were often the same price or cheaper than hostel options.
Like our incredible thai feed in Edinburgh, we unusually had a great, cheap chinese dinner to start our time in Lyon. The next morning we were up and about at 6am to watch the drawn AFL Grand Final via the powers of the internet. The excitement of the game was eclipsed later in the day with loads of washing the first order of business, although the waiting time allowed us to take a look around the river area and centre of town.
Lyon's old town and the hill up from it were arguably the most interesting and most charming parts of the city. It's narrow, historical streets sat at the foot of Lyon's Fourvière Hill and the cathedral which overlooked the entire city, as well as the replica Eiffel Tower which acts as a telecommuniations antenna. There was also a Roman theatre on the hill which dated back to BC years. Later, across the city, we checked out the popular Lycée du Parc which was also home to a free zoo that kept us entertained for a while.
Our accommodation happened to be next door to what is apparently a bit of an institution in Lyon, George's Brasserie, a huge and hugely popular eatery that has been operating since 1836. So for our final meal in France we dined there, Barry sampling the Lyon specialties menu (including calves feet and pistacchio filled sausages) while Elle finally found herself a proper French onion soup.
