KAITIAKE ADVENTURE - WHITE WATER RAFTING
So, after a pretty heavy night of getting drunk pirate style at the Lava bar next to Base Hostel, we got up pretty early to get wet and wild! Slightly hungover/...a little drunk still we got picked up from the hostel and went to base camp to get the briefing of the days adverture... A quick and simple safety and instruction guide and we jumped on our raft and started the decent down the rapids
The Kaituna River has the biggest commercial waterfall drop in New Zealand and at 7 metres high it's pretty fun. That waterfall is grade 5 but most of the rapids are Grade 3 which is still pretty good as Grade 5 is the highest it scales.
We were pretty lucky - our group was 4 lads who wanted it to be a crazy crazy ride so our Guide tried to make it as extreme as he could for us. I immediately said I wanted to fall out if it was possible. It was possible.
We hit our first big drop of about 3 to 4 metres and we "taco'd" the raft with this one. Look at the picture below and you'll understand what I mean. Then we continued down through some beautiful forest scenery to the big drop.
THE BIG ONE../Quick prep on this one and we went for it. This waterfall is completely unpredictable so it's really 50/50 whether you're gonna flip the boat or not. In this case we completely submerged the boat but then sprung back up not having any casualties.
Moving on we were allowed to play around a bit surfing down rapids, jumping out to go down the rapids without a raft and then the guide purposely got our boat wedged against a rock quickly filling with water. Then as if like a real life scene of a frozen jack from titanic sinking as rose pushed him off the wooden raft I was gone. Out the boat and drifting down stream before making it to the side.
My mission was complete id fallen in.
Through some more great forest scenery posing for pictures along the way and we were finally at the finish. What a great experience I was buzzing from it all, and what an amazing hangover cure might I add. The pictures were only $35 which I shared with everyone on the boat so didn't cost that much at all when the costs were split.
Highly recommend this had a great time and the people at Kaitiake are awesome, friendly and a lot of fun.
