Our flight from Beijing to Athens took us across the Himalayan mountains and out of the window we saw what must have been Mount Everest. A huge mountain towering over anything else in sight and even in the eyeline and (what seemed) height of the plane, it could only be the highest mountain on earth!
In Athens we had a little apartment in the city centre and had a mixed week planned, few sights and a bit of beach time. After seeing so many amazing historical places during the rest of our trip it was quite fitting to see one on our European leg. First thing that hit us being back in Europe was the great food we could easily get! In so many far flung places, unless you have a local with you, you just don't get the food you can at home, or in Europe. So as expected, many Greek kebabs and salads were on the menu for our time in Athens! Great meat and really cheap too. Beer was also good, making a change from the 2.5% stuff in China!
Over our first few days we hit most of the main Ancient Greek ruins and museum, most notably the Acropolis. Also some smaller sites around the hill where the Acropolis sits and the first ever Ancient Olympic stadium, impressive feats! It's amazing to think that some of the ruins were started over 2000 years ago. Quite Roman in style the technology back then was amazing. Also amazing how over time the European power shifted away from that area of the world.
The weather was great all week, a bit too hot at times but can't complain. We had a few days down the beach and were surprised to find such a decent stretch of coast so close to the city. One day we hit a very quiet locals beach and one a more hectic touristy beach. It was a weird but nice feeling mixing with normal tourists and holiday makers, a very different feeling to travelling and marked a good trend for the end of the trip.
On our last day we spent the afternoon just chilling and drinking on the balcony. Two minutes walk to the local supermarket to stock up on more supplies and two minutes from our favourite Greek restaurant for our final kebab of the week!
During the week our two year anniversary was hit! Can't believe how much had happened in the last few years and where we are now! As we met in a burger bar in Bali, it would only be right to celebrate with a burger bar meal in Athens... Little trend I think we would be taking forward with us!
Not too much else to report from Athens, just a decent week back in Europe, good food, drink and a few historical sites in between.
Next stop Barcelona and meeting the family for a few days!
