After yesterday I needed a good motel to get clean and rejoin civilisation. So I'm staying in a large suite in the Super8 Motel. Despite arriving about 09.30 this was the last room thanks to a Department of Quality conference and some golfers. I expected a high price for a suite with a King bed, fireplace and balcony but it was only $88 with taxes.
The day started with Barbara the motel owner in White Bird being true to her word and giving me a lift up and over White Bird Pass. That saved me about 10 miles climbing at an average of 8% gradient. It was beautiful from the car. We passed another tourer struggling up from the bottom. The first guy I've seen yet doing the same as me. He was pulling a trailer.
I was left with just 8 miles to ride down into Grangeville. I was ravenous having had just a banana for breakfast in White Bird, so eager was I to leave.
At Oscars on Grangeville's main street, I had a lovely relaxing breakfast of omelette and wheat toast, slurping gallons of coffee. All the time watching the old guy at the Blue Fox cinema across the road. He was changing the film title on the old fashioned signs that used to be outside cinemas and theatres. He must have been cursing wondering why they didn't just call it Star Trek 5 as he slowly climbed up and down his stepladder. There seemed no method to his work, which I personally appreciated, as he shuffled the letters and numbers like a giant scrabble hand. Every few minutes disappearing back inside the movie house to get more letters.
I finished the day at the Blue Fox of course. What a great experience, I was one of seven watching Iron Man 3. Entered the theatre to the sound of the Beach Boys, then Little Richard, The Shirelles, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs... It was exactly what I'd hoped for. Then one trailer and straight into the film! Beautiful.
I love this town.
Curiously no sign of Rolaaand or Gripper Stebson though.
