Woke up early after a night of little sleep to rain pattering down outside. A good thing we packed up our gear and rolled up our awning last night so nothing was wet.
Began packing up, showered snd made brekky and then we discovered a problem with our hot water service. Yesterday we thought there may be a problem with the electric hot water, probably the element but this morning we discovered that there is a leak and we had a lot of water pooling internally, which we had to clean up.
Left Wentworth mid morning heading towards Mildura and before long crossed over the Murray River back into Victoria.
We settled in to the drive, feeling odd to be back on the road with our little home on wheels behind us once more (after 11 days in one place) and also because we are heading back home - and today will be our last full day on the road, and tonight will be our last night.
The surrounding farmland was a lush green carpet set against a backdrop of mostly blue sky and perfect, fluffy white clouds above.
We stopped for lunch in Tempy, a tiny town where, sadly, all the shops including the pub have closed down.
We then drove through the little town of Speed, laughing on reading the town signs, which say 'welcome to Speed'. On reading more about the town we discovered that they ran a campaign some years ago to have the town's name changed to Speedkills to highlight its importance. We believe the campaign got enough online support and the town's name was changed for a month.
A little later we stopped in Hopetoun to check out Lake Lascelles, which is a stunning small lake that allows free camping along its shores. The lake has a stunning green blue colour that I suspect may be some form of algae. I enjoyed walking on the pier and sitting in the warm midday sunshine.
Next and final stop today was Brim, where we have driven specially to see the painted silos. These amazing detailed paintings by a Brisbane artist have really put the tiny town of around 100 residents on the tourist map. We were blown away with the detail on each of the four people painted, especially as it's painted one colour, using hues and shades to create light and shadow and detail such as creases in clothing and veins on the hands.
After admiring the silos we headed to the campsite provided by the town (power, toilets and showers for just $10). We sat by our little home on wheels in the sun nibbling on cheese and olives (minus the wine today) conscious of how lovely it is to take time out at this time of day to sit together and relax. We are holding on to these precious last hours. Maybe we need to have more happy hours when we get home!
Very glad we have power tonight as I've just discovered that it will get down to 2 degrees tonight.
Night night from Brim in Victoria. Next stop. Home. xx
