Struggled to get out of bed today, knowing that the journey today would be so different to every other day of this amazing journey. Today we are going home.
The morning air was cold, so very glad we had power to keep us toasty. And it was nice to have bright blue sky to welcome us homeward bound. We left our little campsite in Brim around 9.30am, passing by those incredible painted silos once more.
We headed south past the small towns of Minyip, Rupanyip and Glenorchy and then through Stawell, the gateway to the Grampians. The surrounding mountains made a stunning backdrop, and we promised ourselves that we will journey out this way again in the not too distant future to explore this area, as we haven't been here for a long time.
We stopped for an early lunch (yes, for our last lunch on the road we made toasted wraps, our favourite lunch!) just outside of Stawell at Sister's Rocks. The rocks themselves were interesting to look at and climb but were covered in a lot of colourful graffiti that in all honesty spoiled the rock formations (for us).
After lunch we pushed on all the way home, bypassing Ballarat, when suddenly the blue sky and fluffy white clouds turned grey and forbidding and the rain pelted down. Yep, this really felt like some kind of traditonal welcome back to Victoria and Melbourne. However, before long, the grey skies gave way to sunshine once more as we crossed over from endless fields to the beginning of the western suburbs. And then suddenly we had our first view of the Melbourne city skyline, after almost six months away the city began to take shape before us on the freeway. We drove through Sunshine, Brooklyn, Spotswood and Port Melbourne, over the Westgate freeway and into the CityLink tunnel. It all felt quite surreal.
Just as we turned into the street before ours Cadbury began to cry loudly and becoming very excited as he obviously recognised his 'stamping ground'. He was beside himself with excitement as Gadi reversed the new caravan into our driveway (in one go, which was very impressive!) and our son came out to greet him (and us!).
What a day. It's still hard to process how it feels to arrive home after such a lengthy journey. It's great to be home but I know that as the coming days and weeks and months pass, we will be reliving so many special moments, and even the not so special moments, that make up living life on the road.
For now, the Zo-Mobil is not zooming anywhere. Nor are we. Even as we settle back in to life at home with our family and friends, I am certain we will begin planning future trips. After all, dreaming costs nothing and is half the fun.
Wishing you all a good night as we settle in to our own bed at home in Melbourne xx
