Standing in the cold picking out a few shooting stars against the black, I half wished they wouldn't turn up. I wanted to go back to bed. They ruthlessly arrived with who I can only assume were 'The Others'. Ten of them in total.
Luckily no introductions were offered as I'd never remember them all.
Off we trekked, taking slightly too frequent breaks but the company was good and we had timed it perfectly.
We arrived at the peak just as tones of deep blue crept over the horizon and spread upwards and outwards with paler blues and pinks giving chase. The clouds below looked like a thick comfy sea rising and engulfing the moutain we were standing on.
I thought I might have a repeat of Taishan, with the clouds too thick for the sun to penetrate. Instead of an orange sunrise it was just going to get light. I wasn't too sad as the clouds looked pretty cool on their own.
I was wrong, the orangey pink sun shone through and we celebrated by taking pictures in some classic Chinese poses. It was a good start to the day.
I went back to bed for an hour before getting some breakfast and trekking around the standard tourist route of the area. My tour included 'White Dragon Cave', 'Red Dragon Cave', 'Black Dragon Cave' and 'Shouting Spring'. Anyone who's been to China will have guessed that the Chinese loved this last one. It's a spring that you can shout at to control it's flow, allegedly. I could hear them a mile off.
The walk was good, but the place was so cold that I was bundled up in bed by four finishing To Kill a Mockingbird. I would have to buy warmer clothes. Or Man Up.
