Hello!
It's been a very busy week! After leaving Chris and Kelly on Monday, Von and I flew east from Perth to Brisbane - and then straight from there to Cairns, north Queensland.
We checked into our backpackers hostel on the Tuesday morning, before heading into the little tourist town of Cairns and chilling out by the lagoon. The following morning we made the first of our two day trips - to Daintree National Park where we enjoyed a rainforest walk and trip down the Daintree river. During the water voyage we got up close and personal with crocodiles and even a small tree snake - the least dangerous creature of the tour so far but the one that filled me with the most dread! It was a nice way for Von to spend her 28th birthday and although tiring, we really enjoyed it.
The following day in Cairns we went snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef. This was a true 'once in a lifetime' experience, during which we saw the fantastic coral reef up close and personal and swam within a couple of feet of a White-tipped Reef Shark! Completely harmless, apparently...
From Cairns we made our way back to Brisbane, checking in to our new hostel located across the road from the impressive Suncorp Stadium where the Lions won the first test against the Wallabies a year ago. A couple of days ago it had hosted the Rugby League State of Origin Game 1 - a match we saw on TV in Cairns and one that really opened my eyes to the intensity of top level rugby league. Supported NSW in the heart of Queensland! On Wednesday night, courtesy of Ben, Paul and Lisa, we enjoyed VIP treatment at the Stadium for the QLD Reds v Highlanders - another superb contest that ended 38-31 in the home side's favour. Checked out some of the Brisbane nightlife thereafter.
The following day in Brisbane was arguably our quietest to date, used for a stroll around the city and eventually, our short flight south to Sydney. We'll return here later in the tour, but on this occasion it was a short seven hour stop over prior to flying to the heart of Australia, the real outback - Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Tomorrow we set out on a three day trek of Uluru where we'll eat bush tucker and sleep under the stars...
