Lena, Lindsey and I decided to go to the waterslides on saturday. A local bus was meant to stop by the resort around noon. Fijian time makes is stop between 11h30 and 1pm. So we tried our luck and started walking and ended up hitch hiking. And it worked ! We got picked up by a pastor, his wife and a friend of them. They were heading to church. We arrived in Somosomo and had Rotis. Rotis are flat local breads filled with curry tuna or veggies. It's just sooo tasty.
We then got a cab ride to the waterslides. 4 local kids were just behind us and ended up showing us where to start the slide. We took turn to keep an eye on our belongings as this place is known for people stealing stuff. It was so much fun but so painful ! My butt is still painful 2 days later. I have a big black bruise on my right cheek butt.
After a couple of slides and a really painful butt we left the river and went to the date line. As a matter of fact, Somosomo is on the exact opposite side of the world from Greenwich, London. After being in Greenwich a few times, I got to literrally go to the other side of the world !! If you stand on one side of the line, it's "today" and "yesterday" on the other side. Pretty funny !
And because the day had been really good so far, one more detail made my day. The date line is located at the end of a rugby field and it happened that there was rugby (7) tournament and i got to the semi final when we arrived. So after the date line we hang around and watched the rugby game for about 15 minutes and left just after it.
We hitch hicked back to Somosomo, bought fruits and started heading back to Matei. Because hitch hiking had been so easy and safe (only because there were 3 of us, I wouldn't do it alone), we decided to try again. And it worked again. A first pick up truck slowed down and pointed us toward a truck behind them. 3 or 4 guys seemed to be sitted at the back. As we walked towards the truck we found out that it wasn't 3 or 4 guys that were sitting there but about 15 !!! They actually belonged to the team that won the rugby tournament earlier ! They were all so nice and funny !! They loved having 3 white girls with them and we loved having 15 rugby players and supporters with us ! It was so funny !
The truck of guys dropped us off at there village. Around 100 people live there but they do have a rugby field ! :) Some guys walked us to the bus station and we ended up walking as god knows when the bus would come ! And the bus came about 20 minutes later (I'd say as I never look at the time here) when my feet started hurting from wearing shoes and getting blisters. Life's definitely better in flip flops !
That day was just one to be remembered !
Upon arrival Adam and Emma, a couple from Luton, England asked Lena, Lindsey and I if we wanted to go to the Coastal walk. Again, I said yes ! A nice walk was then waiting for me the next day....
