I arrived in Fiji after a 40h journey from NYC. Luckily enough I slept over 8h on the plane to Fiji due to my alarm waking me up at 4.45am to catch my flight to NYC. This one lasted 5h30 and I then had to wait at LAX airport for 9h. That was the longest part !
Once in Fiji I again had to wait another 9h before flying to Taveuni as I didn't want to risk the earlier flight.
So here I am, in Taveuni, at the Maravu plantation resort (also known as Tuvununu). I am in a 6 bed dormitory and have been, for the past 2 nights, sharing only with Paul, an english guy who's been doing his Divemaster course for 2 months.
My room is nice despite the fact that we had some HUUUUUGE cockroaches on the first night. The facilities are quite basic. I mean the room that only has a door for the toilet and the cold water in the shower. The kitchen doesn't have a fridge and there are about 3 spoons and 2 forks along with old and burnt pot to cook with. So extremely basic that you have to be very creative but that makes the fun part of it. I end up eating fruits from the surrounding trees (bananas, mangoes, coconut) and a few stuff I bought from the store, that I cooked and will discover (or not) today, how it went, for a whole night at 'room' (it's an outdoor kitchen) temperature (about 22° at night, I'd say and 30° during the day). I'm telling you what, I need to lose a few kg and I've started already ! :)
Yesterday (wednesday, apparently) I went diving. A 2 tank dive. It was soooo nice to be back in the water. Those dives were the first 2 since I got my heart surgery and it felt like I never left the water in 6 years. Diving here is like in the Maldives, drift dives, so there a loads of fish because of the plancton coming in with the current and the corals....OMG the corals are simply AMAZING !! So nice and colorful ! I had so much fun !! Both dives lasted more than 60 minutes, on air with depth to 30m for the 1st dive and 25m for the second dive AND I felt ok afterwards which confirmed the fact that my surgery did work and I can now dive again !! Before my surgery I would have felt all dizzy and bad after the 1st dive. I can't wait now to be an instructor again !
Today I'm getting a taxi with Paul to Samu Samu today. It's a village bigger than Matei where I might be able to buy a pair of shorts and a bikini but for sure, food :)
Tomorrow's plan is to go diving again, the day after, go and check out these waterfalls everyone's talking about, then dive again, then probably another hike somewhere. I have another week here and there's so much to do. Each day is very exciting and you don't know what's waiting for you !
