Tonight the other knights of the round table and I, Sir Gawain, had our New Year's dinner with the king. While we were waiting for King Arthur to allow us to begin our feast a man barged into the hall! He was almost a giant in hight and he had a "jerkin and cloak of green, with golden spurs; in the green belt round his waist jewels were set, and his green saddle was inlaid richly, as also his trappings."(83). His hair was bright green, his beard was green, his face was green and he had green hands and a green horse! He then said that he wanted to speak with the king and challenge the Knights of the Round table to strike him once and in a year in a day he gets to return the blow. No one responded to his crazy challenge and for that he called all of us at the table cowards, which King Arthur took offense to and said he would take the challenge. Well I couldn't let our noble and mighty king try this challenge if it meant he would be hurt so I took it for him in stead. The green knight then got to his knees and I gave him a blow to the neck, chopping of his head but "the knight neither faltered nor fell: swiftly he sprang forward with hands outstretched, caught up his head, and turning with it held in his hand by the hair mounted upon the waiting horse."(85). Then his disembodied head told me to meet him at the green chapel in a year, then he left. After a while talking about what I must now do we began our feast!
