LAND-HO! We saw land for the first time since we’ve been out of ports on this trip! There were 2 islands we passed this morning and then during one of my classes we passed BARBADOS! YES, ICFH, I was so close! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good look OR a picture because I was in class, but it was still quite exciting. In a few months we’ll be there!
Anyways, I should back up a little bit. I woke up this morning at 6:15 to get in line for Add/Drop beginning at 7am. Well, I couldn’t find my ID card so I wasted time looking for that and by 6:30 I made it to the line, but was number 84. Ick. It was a long day of waiting and I didn’t the class I wanted. I still decided to drop the education class because it was geared toward education majors and I DO NOT plan on teaching when I’m older! I picked up a Reptiles and Amphibians Around the World class that my roommate’s also in. It should be fun! Might as well take something bizarre since I have the chance. The only issue is that I have 8AM classes on A and B days…but I get up and get my classes over with so I think that’s better in the long run. (more time for laying out at the pool!)
Ship life is amazing…I’m getting used to being in the rocky sea! Today was the rockiest day so far, except for when we were passing Barbados. Otherwise, it’s pretty much been impossible to walk in a straight line down the hallways! Today was also the best day for tanning! I don’t know why, but it seems like it was just a great day for sun even though EVERY DAY has been sunny! We’ve had amazing weather so far! It rained a little bit this afternoon and was kind of misty this evening, but otherwise we’ve had hot weather and bright sunshine ALL THE TIME! Now back to ship life in general…such a great community has formed on the ship. As I said before, it’s just so easy to meet people and ah, I just can’t explain it but I’m having a blast even when we’re at sea! Also, I’m kind of getting used to people cleaning my room/bathroom everyday and cleaning up my dishes at meals. Uh oh…haha.
Tonight was our first pub night…aka “After Hours” where students can purchase up to 2 alcoholic beverages during dinner and then up to 4 between 2100-2230. The drinks are $2.50 and they actually have a variety of beer and then 2 types of wine and wine coolers. We’re going to have pub nights pretty much every night on the ship except the night before port and the night after because they want to normalize alcohol use since we’re all adults anyways.
Oh, here’s some general notes about Puerto Rico and the trip so far…I’m glad we started in Puerto Rico because it is similar enough to America so it wasn’t a huge culture shock right off the bat. It was also nice because it was more touristy/beachy fun rather than a cultural/emotional experience. I was very impressed with the security on the ship, so I’m sure you’re all relieved to hear this as well. In port, we can come and go as we please at all hours of the day and night, but we have to go through security and swipe our card before we step off the ship. Then, we walked through a big warehouse and had someone checking our ids as we exited. After that, we had someone checking our ids as we went outside the gate to finally get onto the streets. Bottom line is that…I’M SAFE! Hopefully it will be like this in all ports. The only annoying thing about it is that we cannot bring any opened liquid containers on board. Oh well, I’m over it. In general, it’s just an amazing trip! I know I keep saying it, but it’s the truth! While we were in port, it would randomly hit me that I am really going around the world. This is it! It’s going to be over way too soon and I just hope that I will be able to remember everything that happens! It’s so cool that when we dock, we’re all let loose and pretty much act like little kids at Disneyland. SAS is literally invading the world, one port at a time! When going around in port, you’re bound to run into other SAS students! So basically, I want to encourage anyone that hasn’t studied abroad to GO ON SEMESTER AT SEA! You don’t want to miss out on this chance of a lifetime. Trust me.
P.S. Turned out clocks ahead one hour…that means one less hour of sleep! Ah!
