Our SE Asia Tour 2013
Another 8:00 am departure - next stop Paro. Stopped at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Lamperi - bit of a disappointment as not very well established and poorly set out. Lunched at Dochu La - cloudy again so still no views of the Bhutan Himalayas.
We didn't get to Paro until 3:00 and raced off to visit Paro Dzong before it closed. Paro Dzong is one of Bhutan's most impressive and well known dzongs. It was built in 1649 and, as a fort, was initially used on numerous occasions to defend the Paro valley from invasions from Tibet. Now, like most dzongs, it houses both the monastic body and district government offices, including the local courts. The dzong is built on a steep hillside and comprises several buildings and courtyards.
AFter a bit of souvenir shopping in Paro town it was on to our hotel, dinner and an early night in readiness for our big walk up to the Tiger's Nest Monastery the next day.
